May 2017 DVD Releases

It’s time to take a look at this month’s new DVD releases. You may not have had the time to catch up on the movies when they hit the cinemas because you were busy preparing a presentation for next Monday, or you might have had a long day in the office or the building site so now’s the time to catch up.

La La Land

Musicals never get old. Once in a while, we need a movie with lots of music to it, don’t you think? Thank goodness for La La Land.

This movie tells the story of how a musician and an aspiring actress met and fell in love. And this one gets interesting too. The place where the two met, Los Angeles, is one reference to the title of the movie. The second reference is the idiom regarding getting out of touch with reality.

Not only is this movie filled with lots of music, but it also will give you butterflies in the stomach. Aren’t Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling good together on screen? Their chemistry is so good you’ll never wonder why this movie won a string of accolades during the Academy Awards.

For those of you who are skeptical of this movie for this being the same old boring love story, hear ye, hear ye: you should definitely watch this. This is not just a love story or a movie filled with music. It teaches you about working hard to reach your dreams no matter what it takes. And oh, we really didn’t expect that ending! We love Musicals DVDs.

Fifty Shades Darker

If you had seen “Fifty Shades of Grey,” you must be one of the many fans who were also waiting for Fifty Shades Darker. The relationship between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey goes deeper and darker.

Ana and Christian worked through their relationship together amidst angry and jealous ex-girlfriends, revengeful unrequited lovers, and a raging battle within one’s self. Will Christian finally know what love is? Or will he continue to manipulate Ana like a marionette on the guise of “love?”

Can love easily change someone who is broken and who, in the end, likes to be in control?

Lion

What makes biographical movies difficult to produce? It’s the fact that it is based on real events. Creators of the movie must keep the story real according to the original story itself. But the beauty of biographical movies lies in the fact that real life is a story full of wonders and plot twists which we never know even existed.

“Lion” tells the story of a young boy who had been separated from his family when he  boarded on a train to look for his brother. After a series of unfortunate incidents, he eventually landed in an orphanage where an Aussie couple later adopted him and took him to Australia. But as they say, orphans, in one way or another, will always want to go find their roots. Thanks to modern technology, the young man was able to find his family and his home.

We’ve mentioned this is a biographical movie, right? This movie is actually based on a book “A Long Way Home” by an Australian businessman, Saroo Brierley, who was born as Sheru Munshi Khan in India.

Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman definitely made this a must-see movie.

A United Kingdom

Love indeed is mysterious. It has caused a lot of people to think about meeting their soulmates, twin flames, or karmic partners. Love is the reason why William Shakespeare coined “star-crossed lovers” to describe the relationship between Romeo and Juliet. Love is the reason why Apollo granted Cassandra with the gift of prophecy (only for him to be rejected) in the Greek mythology. Love is a the reason why the Chinese and the Japanese believe so much in the red string of fate, and even have a number of stories about it.

And for others, Love is the reason why distance and social classes are broken. And despite the challenges, those who are truly in love end up together.

We can fabricate stories about the different scenarios about love, but nothing beats peculiar love stories that are real.

Imagine this: a King from the present-day Botswana met and married a British woman. Looks like a fine twist from fairy tales, right? Sounds easy, but in reality, the union of these two were met with opposition from the British government and the tribe of the King. Politics way back after the Second World War were just as messy as the politics of today. Though Seretse Khama may have been exiled, his British wife Ruth Williams became popular among the natives.

Eventually, King Seretse came back to his own country, saw to it that his nation be independent from British rule, and went on to create Botswana and be its first duly elected president.

Hidden Figures

It’s not a movie about Mathematics, nor is it about solving trigonometry or calculus problems.

It’s a biographical film about three African-American women mathematicians who worked for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at a time when the Soviet Union and the United States were on a race to send people to space.

These three had proved their worth by showing off their smarts in advanced mathematics to make Project Mercury and other space pursuits possible. And despite being looked down for their color, these three women still walked down in space history.

This movie is a must-see for some reasons: women empowerment and a unique plot. Who gets to see a movie about mathematicians everyday?

House Of Bond

The life of a business tycoon is something intriguing, especially once you know that there are some of them who are self-made. What made these tycoons rich? What were their inspiration in life? How are rags-to-riches stories made? And another good but seldom asked question, do the stars of these tycoons fade too?

“House of Bond” is a mini-series telling of the story of Australian tycoon Alan Bond. See how this nobody rose in the ranks to be one of Australia’s elites, how he won the America’s Cup, and witness how a political scandal caused his downfall.

Black Sails Season 4

This TV series is a prequel based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island,” and the fourth season is the last in the installment.

If only the New Providence Island could speak, it could tell tales of pirates and bloody wars.

This season continues on what had occurred in the third: the complete control over the Island between the British Empire and the pirates. Will Captain Woodes Rogers claim his stake on the island for the British Empire, or will the pirates completely claim the land and its resources as their own?

Broadchurch Season 3

Broadchurch Season 3 focuses on the investigation of a sexual assault, with the investigation done by Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller. Despite Broadchurch being a small town, what secrets are still being kept? What happened during a party, and why did a rape transpire? Was the rape a crime of opportunity, or was it premeditated? What are the conspiracies surrounding the case, and who are the different people involved? Was it just one sexual assault case, or will Hardy and Miller uncover more?

And the question that has been hounding since Season 1: Will the death of Danny Latimer finally be put to rest?

Despite this crime drama TV series just having three seasons, you can expect each season to be cohesive, as each season has its own case, with each episode having its own story to tell.

These 8 are just among the new releases in store this month. Happy viewing!
