The Bible Mini Series DVD

The Bible DVD has been the most epic story to hit our screens since Ben Hur.  This massive Bible mini-series was never supposed to be that popular but has been a surprise hit in the US and now Australia.  Given that it is a Mark Burnett project it was never going to be anything but a success.  Mark Burnett has brought us reality TV gold, such as Survivor, The Apprentice and The Voice, however The Bible is the first time he has ever produced a scripted show.  The Bible is jointly produced with Mark Burnett’s wife Roma Downey, the star of classic TV drama show, Touched By An Angel.  She also stars in The Bible mini-series as Mother Mary.  I wonder if she gets paid twice…

Given that in today’s modern fast paced technological world, religion and its values seem to be on the decline, The Bible has proven that for millions of viewers around the world that the stories from the Bible still have great resonance.  Whether for people of faith, or for those that just love a well written and produced TV with fantastic CGI effects, The Bible seems to have hit a chord with a range of demographics.  There are probably a large number of viewers that may have been a little surprised that they were fascinated by such an old story, given that they would probably not have read the Book itself cover to cover.  But as that was the motivation of Mark Burnett to create The Bible mini-series then he has achieved that end.

Now that The Bible is new to DVD and Blu Ray it gives many an opportunity to watch this 10 hour mini-series for the first time, or again.  Given that watching it on TV required a commitment to stay awake until after 11pm on a school night, I am assuming that there are a fair percentage of people that will need to get the DVD to allow them to watch it at a more civilised time of day.

The Bible mini series DVD will no doubt go down as one of the most classic and enduring mini-series of all time and will continue to be popular for many years.  The story itself is over 2000 years old and is still as popular as ever.  But as we demand our TV programmes to be more sophisticated to keep up with our high definition (probably smarter than I am) TV sets to have a big budget, well produced and high quality drama series is fantastic.

There are rumours as well that The Bible mini series will be developed, by Mark Burnett, into a three hour theatrical release and there may even be a sequel to the mini-series (what comes after The Bible?). But while we wait for Burnett to make up his mind on that do yourself a favour and enjoy this epic mini series on DVD or Blu Ray.

Strictly Ballroom

Strictly Ballroom is one of Australia’s most popular movies of all time. It wasn’t expected to be so popular when it was made in 1992 but Strictly Ballroom DVD is one of the most popular Australian DVDs of all time.

I think we’ve all seen Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom movie, but did anyone see the Strictly Ballroom stage musical coming? Seriously, anyone? The Strictly Ballroom musical is in production and will be hitting the Sydney stage next month. Baz has promised it will include all our favourite music from the movie including Love Is In The Air and is adding more Aussie classic music. Who would have thought, a Strictly Ballroom stage musical but when you think about it, even though the idea never dawned on me before the announcement, I can’t help but say ‘Its About Time’.

After the incredible ongoing success of Mamma Mia, based on Abba’s music, there has been a string of other stage shows based on bands like Abba and older movies like Strictly Ballroom. Some good and some, umm, well absolutely terrible.

Will Strictly Ballroom work on the stage? I think it will. I wouldn’t expect it to become a stage classic but I think it will find an audience. It’s only going to find an audience in Australia so I expect the budget to be limited so don’t expect to go and see an extravaganza like a Lion King or Les Miserables but if you like Australian productions I’m sure you’ll love this show and let’s face it, we should all go our and support good Aussie shows like this. If we don’t go and see it, we shouldn’t complain that all our stage shows are imported. Looking forward to seeing it and looking forward to seeing what you all thought when you see it next month.

NCIS DVDs still remains the most popular American made show TV on DVD. We’re up to season 10 of NCIS and season 4 of NCIS LA but the show is getting even more popular year on year. Most TV shows start to lose their momentum and popularity after a few seasons and yet NCIS continues to be so popular.

I think one of the big reasons for this is they found a formula that works and they stuck with it. They didn’t tinker around the edges with the format or style or actors (though the lead actress was dumped after season 1 only for her to find greater popularity in Rizzoli And Isles). They stuck with almost the same cast and style and didn’t try to get too clever with their storylines. Remember how CSI used to be one of the best shows on TV, then they were forced to change actors, got way too complicated story lines and then their viewing audience plummetted after around season 8. A little unfair in my opinion as it still is quality TV but when the audience jumps, I can’t remember a situation when they come back. Actually they did with Family Guy so I just disproved my theory.

Anyway, NCIS was originally a spin-off of the popular 1990’s show Jag. And then in turn after 6 seasons of NCIS came it’s spin-off NCIS LA which has gone off on it’s own tangent. The first season of NCIS LA was of a similar format to NCIS but has since grown into it’s own beast. It has become hugely popular. Largely due to it’s popular 2 main leading men of Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J. Personally, I’m still getting over LL Cool J being a serious actor but I guess if Ice T can do it successfully in Law & Order SVU for so long who am I to judge.

This month brings us the release of NCIS season 10 and NCIS LA season 4 which are no doubt set to be one of this Father’s Day most popular gifts for good reason. DVDs are always popular Father’s Day gift ideas, particularly New Release DVDs. But it does have tough competition with the likes of Underbelly Squizzy and Fast & Furious 6 but I think few Dad’s would be disappointed with either of those options really. But I guess it comes down to personal taste.

Will NCIS continue to gain in popularity? Well, there’s got to be an end to it some time. Whilst season 11 has already been agreed to, who knows where it will go from there. Maybe a couple more seasons will see NCIS out but there are at least a few more NCIS LA seasons yet to come and who knows, I bet there will be another spin-off coming. NCIS Miami anyone?
