Old age.
Many would envision old age as the time when an elderly individual would just sit on his rocking chair in the front porch and watch the world go by. Others would envision this as a time when the elderly would be sitting on his or her bed and watching the birds outside the window in a retirement home. Still, some would think old age is the time when the elderly would be alone, helpless, and without any occupation to stimulate his senses. For most people, old age is a fearful time because of certain inevitable things that happen, such as loss of income, dwindling pension, the appearances of degenerative diseases, and impending death. That would often come in someone’s lifetime, whether she or he has prepared or not. Regret also affects some old people, especially those who had not done what they would have wanted to have done or those who can only dwell in the what if’s.
Just because a person has reached the age past sixty-five, it does not mean that his or her life has to be boring, lonely, sad, or monotonous. A mature Aussie does not have to wither with the passing of golden time, unfruitful, unloved, or unappreciated. Though old age is unavoidable, there are still some good things that come by, such as the presence of grandchildren, new hobbies, new activities, new friends, and new surprises that will change one’s perspective from hopeless to hopeful. That is why it is such a necessity to engage the senior Australians into activities according to their capabilities to occupy them, and for them to feel dignified and fulfilled. Some may say these people might be cranky, yes it’s apart of their charm, but we all should try to be patient with them, for we all will, one day, fill in their shoes. Because these people had seen the world before we did (and they might even had seen a number of recessions and market crashes in their lifetime), their wisdom is valuable. The life past middle age might just give one a whole new exciting adventure. Who knows? The golden years just might be the best time to catch up!
