Top 10 Reasons to Shop Australian This Christmas

This Christmas we have more choice than ever before. Whether we shop offline or online, whether we purchase from Australian online stores or overseas stores.

Firstly, I do declare an interest, as an employee of DVDLand. DVDLand is a fully Australian store located within Australia, on Queensland’s Gold Coast and supports Australians and Australian jobs. We’re proud to be a 100% fully Australian store.

Our top 10 reasons to shop Australian this Christmas.

  1. It supports Australia and Australian jobs. I guess this was the obvious number one reason but it’s easy to forget that when we shop within Australia your dollars supports our economy which supports Aussie jobs.
  2. The product’s quality. You know by purchasing within our country you’re purchasing quality and not a cheap import.
  3. Aussie service. You know you’re dealing with Aussies that provide great local service.
  4. Fast delivery. I guess this one is obvious too but we often forget to factor this in to our shopping decisions. Australian stores, on average will get your order to you faster simply due to the distance your order travels.
  5. You know the product is made for Australia. This is particularly important for DVDs as imported DVDs are not made for our DVD players and may not play in your DVD player. This is the number one reason to purchase the Game Of Thrones DVD at DVDLand.
  6. Easier to contact. Australian stores are easier to contact being local.
  7. It feels good. It feels good to support Australia, doesn’t it.
  8. When shopping within Australian you are covered by our consumer rights. When shopping internationally you have no rights that you automatically get from Australian stores.
  9. Why not. If the product is the same and price is similar, why wouldn’t you shop locally?
  10. Santa shops in Oz. Don’t believe me, ask him next time you see him (though don’t bother him now, he’s got a lot on his plate right now).

One final tip. Before ordering, check the store really is Australian. There are plenty of stores out there pretending to be Australian that look Aussie, but aren’t. Don’t assume just because they quote prices in Australian dollars or have a .com.au address that they are Aussie. Check the address on the store’s website is an Australian address and check they have an ABN quoted on their website and make sure GST is quoted on your order.
Have fun shopping this holiday season and from all of us at DVDLand, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

We didn’t get room for our classic DVD box sets like the Sopranos, Friends, West Wing, Fawlty Towers or Seinfeld. Oh well, this may have made your Christmas shopping even harder but at least your spoiled for choice. Have a very Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Is daylight savings killing commercial TV and fading our curtains?

Remember the days when several Aussie shows a week used to rate over a million viewers? Well something is happening to Australian commercial TV at the moment where hardly any shows are reaching that mark. Foxtel shows are going from strength to strength but channels seven, nine and ten are struggling. Is it because their execs are missing opportunities that pay TV is picking up? Yes I mean you Newsroom, Orange Is The New Black and Game Of Thrones season 4 DVD. Is it changing viewing habits? Or is it a more simple explanation of daylight savings?

Industry experts are blaming daylight savings. Perhaps their office curtains are also fading due to daylight savings too so perhaps they should move to Queensland where there is no daylight savings. But seriously, evidence appears to support their hypothesis. It appears people are abandoning traditional commercial TV for outside activities and spreading their viewing over free to air digital channels and pay TV. This could actually stop a few impending productions. Recently channel seven canned A Place To Call Home despite good ratings and loyal viewers. There was quite an uproar over this decision on social media including DVDLand’s own Facebook page and Google+ page. So much so that Foxtel came to a groundbreaking arrangement to buy the show and commit to making a third season for airing in 2015. But with the ratings of shows like Asher Keddie’s brilliant Party Tricks not living up the past levels of Offspring and Packed To The Rafters is a concerning sign.

In the short term it may just mean that late Spring and early Summer commercial TV loses a lot of Australian content but if ratings don’t bounce back after summer, there may be some very unpopular decisions coming our way from the TV station execs. At least we all still have our favourite shows to watch on DVD.

Robin Williams Final Movie May Never Be Seen?

Surely it can’t be. Reports are coming in that Robin William’s final movie Boulevard may never be released. And it’s not a dog of a movie either, it looks like to be a powerful drama that would be fitting as a final curtain call of the talented late actor.

Boulevard co stars Kathy Baker and Bob Odenkirk, written by Douglas Soesbe and directed by Dito Montiel. Williams plays Nolan Mack a gay man coming to grips with his sexuality during mid life. Nolan hires a male prostitute who he initial develops a crush on that grows deeper and deeper. Kathy Baker plays his wife who you may remember from Picket Fences.

The movie is already in the can but struggling to find funding for distribution which is very hard to believe considering the consumer appetite for a final dramatic movie from one of the world’s favourite actors. The unfinished product was shown to a group of critics who raved about it so it’s hard to see why it’s struggling for distribution funding. We trust this isn’t a media stunt to gain extra attention but surely they wouldn’t be that disrespectful to Robin’s legacy? As these media reports start to circulate we won’t be surprised to see someone pick the film up but if you believe the experts this movie may never be seen on the big screen but at least we can hope for a straight to DVD release in 2015.

Whilst Boulevard was Robin’s final drama, his final comedy A Merry Friggin Christmas DVD will be out for Christmas, not surprisingly. In this one he stars alongside Lauren Graham and Wendi McLendon-Covey. It’s one of those estranged families get together for Christmas movies. Whilst you wouldn’t watch this movie 9 months of the year, it is quite a funny movie to watch over the holiday season where Robin’s character realises he’s left his son’s gifts at home so he tries an 8 hour drive home and back in time for Christmas morning.

We do hope Boulevard will eventually be seen, if not on the big screen, at least on DVD and Blu Ray. Those few that have watched it liken the performance Good Will Hunting which may be an overstatement but I guess none of us know until we see. Fingers crossed for some good news soon.

October 2014 Release Highlights

It’s a TV show bonanza at the moment, and I don’t mean the Cartwrights on the Ponderosa; not that there’s anything wrong with that. There are so many great TV shows releasing on to DVD at the moment that it’s a feast for the viewer. While most of them are the big US TV hit shows, one is fantastic Aussie drama that is the Wentworth Season 2 DVD. This prison drama is a shining example of quality Aussie drama production. This drama is a contemporary reimagining of one of Australia’s longest running and beloved TV shows, Prisoner Cell Block H. Wentworth has been a huge success in Australia and overseas, now being shown in over 20 countries.

Some of TVs best dramas are also being released soon, including Simon Baker in The Mentalist season 6. Simon plays Patrick Jane an American fake psychic. He does the accent so well that you almost forget he is an Aussie. Another good drama that has a twist on the usual cop drama is Person Of Interest season 3. Although we know that there isn’t a super computer that can predict who will either commit a crime or be a victim of one, this show makes us think that reality is very possible and not too far away in our future. It’s both a comforting and terrifying thought at the same time. All our technology that we can’t get through the day without could both save us and know our every move at the same time. This show presents this fascinating dilemma at the same time delivering quirky Harold and the dry wit of John in this variation of the dynamic crime fighting duo that all good crime dramas need.

And of course, who doesn’t love the relationships and romance of Grey’s Anatomy. This show is still going strong and Season 10 on DVD is coming out now. Follow the trials and tribulations of Meredith at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. This show has been a guilty pleasure for so many for years and it keeps delivering great drama and magical romance.

For those who love comedy the final season of How I Met Your Mother is out now. This show changed the half hour sitcom format with its unusual and quirky narrative and wonderful cast. The supremely talented Neil Patrick Harris is a delight in this show. The whole cast has created a legendary comedy show that is a classic alongside Friends and Seinfeld.

October is a fantastic time to get some great TV shows on DVD to enjoy some of your favourite shows.
